Shells.
Mysteries never unraveled.
Nature and Art, they seem to flee apart,
And then, before we know it, reunite;
The conflict, too, is over in my heart,
And both now hold for me the same delight.
Goethe.
My work is all about nature. The link is always nature and culture bound together. The natural part is inherently about rhythms and the relationships of the rhythms in nature, as well as the underlying structure of life and living. The rhythms have different manifestations. This can be manifested in a repetition in color, materials, sound etc. and is not always obvious. My latest work combines the natural and the manmade. Nature in culture, culture in nature. Bound and built together through different logics. I want to express myself as a product of nature and give shape to the human and natural environment. The way we are furnishing our environment is also the consequence of our fight with, and our survival in nature.
My desire is to contribute to Dutch culture and, by extension, culture in general. For me culture is expressed in the making of something: production from history but also an expression of my thoughts as a representation of history.
Craft is an important aspect of my work. Each shell has been glued on a surface with attention and patience. Endeavour, continuous attention and persistence until the piece ceases to irritate me.
